2020 Tax Exemption Renewal

Q.  I received my Receipt for 2020 Tax Exemption Renewal. I've moved out but my son rents the home while he goes to UNF.  Can I claim the exemption since he is a relative?

A.  No, if the home was not your primary residence as of January 1st, you no longer qualify for the homestead exemption.  Unfortunately some owners in your situation unknowingly claim exemptions such as in the case of rental properties or second homes.  However Florida law is clear in that it's your responsibility to notify the Property Appraiser's office if your home is no longer eligible for the exemption or if the use of the property or status or condition of the owner changes.  Failure to do so can result in severe consequences including back taxes, penalties and interest.  Good luck.
